the masses don't alight the train, they get off it

I've often struggled with the language public transport companies use when talking to their customers. 

It's as if they only consider the industry they represent, and not the audiences they are talking to. 

Take this tweet from rail company Greater Anglia (apologies for the poor quality). Whilst 'alight' may well be the technical/historical/correct term for 'getting out of a vehicle, especially a train or bus', in this case it's probably inappropriate. 

Why not just say 'get off'? Does what it says on the tin. No ambiguity at all, even for foreign supporters.

The objective of any mass communication (Greater Anglia has 125,000 followers) is to make sure as many people as possible understand the message you're trying to get across. 

And the simpler you keep the language, the more public you keep the language, the more chance you have of achieving this.
